YouTube Shorts Word Count Guide

Use this table to plan the perfect Shorts script length. The 60-second limit is strict — going even 1 second over means your video won't appear in the Shorts feed.

Target LengthSlow (130 WPM)Normal (150 WPM)Fast (180 WPM)
15 seconds~33 words~38 words~45 words
30 seconds~65 words~75 words~90 words
45 seconds~98 words~113 words~135 words
55 seconds~119 words~138 words~165 words
60 seconds (max)~130 words~150 words~180 words
📱 The golden rule for Shorts Most viral YouTube Shorts run 30–45 seconds — NOT the full 60. Shorter Shorts get rewatched more, and rewatches are the #1 signal YouTube uses to push Shorts into the feed. Aim for 75–113 words at normal pace for maximum algorithmic performance.

How Long Can YouTube Shorts Be?

YouTube Shorts must be 60 seconds or under to qualify for the Shorts feed. This is a hard cutoff — a 61-second video will be treated as a regular video and won't appear in Shorts.

In 2024, YouTube extended the maximum Shorts length from 60 seconds to 3 minutes in some regions. However, the original 60-second format still dramatically outperforms longer Shorts in the algorithm for most creators. The calculator above uses the 60-second target as the eligibility threshold.

⚠️ Don't pad your Shorts to hit 60 seconds — the algorithm rewards rewatches, not length. A tight 30-second Short with high rewatch rate will always outperform a padded 58-second Short with low retention.

What Makes a Great YouTube Shorts Script

Hook in the first 3 seconds

At 150 WPM, 3 seconds = approximately 7–8 words. Your first sentence must immediately state what the viewer is about to get — not build up to it. "Here's why your Shorts keep failing" beats "Hey guys, welcome back to my channel" every single time.

One idea, fully delivered

The biggest Shorts script mistake is trying to cover multiple points. A Short should deliver one complete idea — one tip, one fact, one story, one transformation — with a clear beginning, middle, and end. If your script needs two points, make two Shorts.

End before they expect it

Shorts that end abruptly — where the viewer thinks "wait, it's already over?" — generate significantly more rewatches than Shorts that signal their ending. Do not include a traditional outro, subscribe reminder, or wind-down. Cut the moment your point lands.

Write at fast pace — then trim

Write your first draft at whatever length feels natural. Paste it into the timer above. Then trim to hit your target time — usually 30–45 seconds. Trimming is faster than expanding, and tighter scripts always perform better.

💡 The 20% buffer rule: Write your script to run 20% shorter than your target. If you want a 45-second Short, write to 36 seconds. Nerves, emphasis, and natural pauses will add the remaining time when you record. This prevents the frustrating experience of a script that tests at 58 seconds and records at 64.
